A communication system for building a speech database for speech synthesis, a relay device therefor, and a relay method therefor are provided to reproduce personal characteristics based on dialogue between a phone and a video phone. A receiver(401) receives copied voice data of the first communication terminal from a relay device. A voice data processor stores the voice data in a voice data storage device(403). A mixed voice database generator(404) builds a voice synthesis database for the first communication terminal based on the voice data. If a voice synthesis request is received from the first communication terminal, a voice synthesis device(406) synthesizes voice based on the voice synthesis database.
