This invention relates to an alkaline activator system which comprises specific mixtures of non-sterically- hindered amine compounds and sterically-hindered aminoacids, and their use in processes for the purification or scrubbing of acid gases. The preferred activator system comprises a mixture of i) diethanolamine or 1,6-hexane diamine and ii) N-secondary butyl-glycine or pipecolinic acid.
