Such a comminution device has a charging shaft which opens into a chopping chamber in which chopping blades which rotate about a vertical axis are arranged. Next to the chopping chamber a cutting chamber is arranged with cutting blades which rotate about a vertical axis and into which a feed pipe opens. The chopping blade and the cutting blade are driven by separate shafts. As a result, the blades, like the two chambers, are spatially separated from one another so that the blades and the chambers can be cleaned and serviced more easily. In addition, failures due to the shaft or the like becoming blocked are largely avoided.
