In order to keep the risk of infection at a minimum when a large number of animals are injected with the same needle, an injection gun having a sleeve surrounding the needle is provided. The sleeve comprises two telescopic pipes. A releasable plastic cap in which a sponge impregnated with a sterilizing substance is located is fixed on the free end of the sleeve. The cap is provided with a screw-off section which is connected with the remaining part of the cap via a thin-walled annular neck. This section is separated from the remaining part of the cap by unscrewing, so that an opening is formed in the end wall of the cap. This is followed by an injection procedure in which the end of the cap is put on the intended injection site, the two tubes being pushed into one another, so that the needle tip moves through the sponge and penetrates through the opening into the injection site. <IMAGE>
