The invention relates to a surgical hand-held drill comprising a housing lower part which is elongate, open at the top and can be gripped with one hand, a housing upper part tightly sealing this housing lower part and a battery-driven, electric motor drive unit inserted in the assembled housing, in which a tensioning element for a drilling tool is mounted so as to be rotatable and adjustable in the housing upper part transversely to the longitudinal direction of the housing lower part, in which the drive unit is in operative connection with the tensioning element and causes the latter to execute rotary movements, and in which a switch which can be operated with the index finger for switching the electric motor of the drive unit on and off projects on the front narrow side of the housing lower part in the upper region. By a special arrangement of the operating elements and coupling thereof with the drive unit optimum one-handed operation of the hand-held drill is achieved.
