The invention relates especially to means for making the pressure and the temperature in the external combustion chamber of a combustion space fed by a compressor set so high between compressors and decompressors, while keeping the whole motor or the combustion plant safe in operation, that at the high temperature even solid fuel, for example in rod form, can be combusted with a given pushing speed of the fuel rod. The temperature can be raised sufficiently for the fuel rod being pushed in to ignite spontaneously and to burn. Gas which is too hot after the combustion may be efficiently cooled by spraying in water and used for the performance of work. In carrying out the invention it was found that such motors with external combustion chambers can also operate, because of good compressors, valves and design of the combustion space, as petrol engines with degrees of efficiencies, not inferior to those of conventional spark-ignition engines. Fuel powder can also be combusted and the parts for completion of the motor can find further applications in hydraulics and pneumatics and also in aircraft construction and in the vertical take-off of fixed wing aircraft. Because the decompressors in such motors give out work in each downward stroke, the motors are especially compact or they give increased power per weight and dimensions.
