The device for filling and distributing cheese curd into pre-pressing or final pressing tanks comprises a distributing carriage which can be moved to and fro along the vat and spaced apart, and which bears a number of filling pipes which are arranged next to one another transversely to the direction of travel, with their downwardly directed outlet ends located inside the vat outline. These pipes are connected to a cheese-curd storage container and can be charged with cheese curd from the latter by means of a pump. At the same time, the outlet ends of the filling pipes can be moved up and down and, during filling of the tank with cheese curd, can be raised from a lower starting operating position into an upper final operating position by means of a lifting drive depending upon the increasing filling level of the tank.
