PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for preparation of a large amount of dictionaries for identification and enable identification of characters of high degree of freedom by generating a dictionary in on-line state from a sample of entry prior to main reading, and controlling identification of main reading by using the dictionary. CONSTITUTION:Characters, etc. on a form 1 are scanned by a scanner 10, and a photoelectric conversion output 100 obtained is supplied to an entry sample storage register 22 and a coincidence counting circuit 23 in an identification section 12. An output signal 102 of the register 22 is supplied to the circuit 23. Calculation of coincidence is performed for the whole entry sample and each character for each character of main information for binary-coded monochromatic two- dimensional patterns from the signal 102 and the scanning output of information entered columns, and the result of calculation is led to a maximum-value calculating circuit 24 by an output line 103. The number of results of calculation is as many as the number of kinds of entered samples. The circuit 24 selects the maximum value out of these, and sets a category having the maximum value to an output register 13 by an output signal 104.
