PURPOSE:To perform indirect recognition avoiding erroneous reading by finding out the area of a polygon connecting points carved on a marking line, comparing it with the area of a reference mark pattern and recognizing a conforming mark as an observed mark. CONSTITUTION:A picture image corresponding to a point (d) of carved mark is photoelectrically converted through a camera 1 and a camera interface 2 and introduced to a recognition processing device 3. The device 3 quantize video input to one of ''0'' or ''1'' and outputs to a picture cutting out circuit 5. The circuit 5 removes irregular noise 6 in the signal to obtain a smoothened picture signal and generates short pulse corresponding to rising and falling edges of the picture signal. Consequently, after being confirmed that the picture signal indicates the point (d), the picture signal is inputted to a processing unit 7. The position of coordinate of the center of the point (d) is found by the unit 7 and an area formed by three points (d) is calculated. The area is compared with the area of a reference mark pattern of a memory unit 8, and a mark that conforms is recognized as an observed mark.
