A light beam (5) is transmitted at right angles through a level-indicating tube (1) to a photo-electric receiver (4). In this case, the total reflection of the light beam which occurs at the curvature (meniscus) of the liquid level (6) is used to assign to the liquid level the received signal corresponding to the light intensity greatly reduced thereby. For this purpose, the received signal is evaluated in a microprocessor (9), a time-division multiplex circuit (7) being interposed for the purpose of a quasi-continuous measurement of levelin the case of a multiplicity of arranged one on top of the other receivers (4). <IMAGE>
