A cooling water regulator for internal combustion engines is proposed with a thermostat valve with expansion material thermostat for the actuation of the valve element controlling the valve seat. The plunger of the expansion material thermostat is supported by means of an abutment, whilst the housing with valve disc can be displaced against a return spring in the event of expansion of the expansion material. The abutment is formed from a movable, adjustable control element which can be actuated by means of a control device operating as a function of an external variable of a medium, especially the temperature. As a result it is possible to automatically vary the operating point of the thermostat valve as a function, for example, of the temperature of the oil or exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine or the ambient air, so as to advance or delay opening of the valve, with automatic adjustment to temperature changes.
