The instrument exerts pressure on the heart of a patient suffering from cardiac insufficiency, and with specific timing presses the sternum inwards to compress the heart muscle with a view to maintain blood, circulation and arterial pressure, and even breathing. It takes the form of a piston and cylinder unit, the connecting rod end of which locates directly or indirectly against the sternum external skin covering through a hole in a breast shield. - A plate above the heart shield supports a housing containing the piston and cylinder unit and controls, and it ends are bent towards the shield. The breast shield is attached to the patient by straps using standard hooks and eyes which either pass around the body of the patient or are attached to the bed frame.
