PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound, especially acetic acid and acetic acid esters, directly, selectively, in high efficiency, by reacting CO with H2 in a liquid medium containing an Ru-Co catalyst and a halogen-containing cocatalyst, in the presence of a specific organic phosphine oxide. CONSTITUTION:A gaseous mixture of CO and H2 is made to react in a liquid medium containing an Ru compound and a Co compound as main catalyst, a halogen-containing cocatalyst, and if necessary other accelerator, in the presence of an organic phosphine oxide of formula R3P=O (R is 1-20C alkyl or aryl), e.g. triethylphosphine oxide, etc., at 150-350 deg.C and 30-1,000kg/cm<2>G to obtain the objective compound such as acetic acid, ethanol, methanol, and their esters, useful as industrial chemicals and solvents. EFFECT:The phosphine oxide plays the role of the reaction solvent and a base to economically produce acetic acid, and is effective to increase the rate of production of acetic acid and the molar ratio of the produced acetic acid to ethanol.
