The device for protecting a line against overvoltages includes a discharger 1 whose main electrodes are connected to a line wire F and to earth, and a decoupling circuit 2 having a first winding L1 in series with the line wire and a second winding L2, coupled magnetically with the first winding L1, joined on the one hand to the line wire and on the other hand to a control electrode g of the discharger. A resistor R1 is in series with the second winding, and an element 4 with resistance varying as a function of voltage is joined, at the application end, between the line wire and earth. <IMAGE>
