PURPOSE:To improve the speed of segment detecting process by extracting plurally existing edge parts in parallel. CONSTITUTION:Outputs from video device 1 are digital-converted by a signal converting circuit 10 and stored in a picture image memory 2. A scanning circuit 3 finds the postion of each picture element of the memory 2 and, at the same time, sends picture data of each picture element to a mask scanning section 30 composed of three rows of shift registers 31-33. In this way, an action equal to that obtained when the memory 2 is successively scanned in the line direction with a mask W is realized. An edge detector 4 detects edge constituting points of pictures from picture data from the registers 31-33 and sends edge intensity and edge direction to a data distributing circuit 5 together with picture element position data outputted from an address setting circuit 34. The data distributing circuit 5 discriminates whether input data come to an edge constituting point or not and distributes all data to some stack after comparing them with data stored in addresses designated by each pointer 61a-61n.
