Control device for control variables of an internal combustion engine

A control device for control variables of an internal combustion engine is proposed in which, in addition to load and engine speed signals, a signal referring to the smooth running is also processed and this smooth-running signal (or rough-running or running-limits signal) is determined by way of fluctuations in the volume or mass fractions of the exhaust gas. For processing of these exhaust gas fluctuations, a speed signal is also advantageously incorporated in order to be able to take account of the variation in the exhaust gas fluctuation signals as a function of the engine speed.
