In a video recorder, the colour subcarrier (Fm), the frequency of which is reduced, is interleaved into the lower frequency band of the luminance signal (Y) whilst retaining the PAL quarter-line offset, and recorded together with this luminance signal by frequency modulation of the picture carrier. As a result, the frequency band below the modulated picture carrier becomes free for recording audio signals. <IMAGE>
