A common internal and external cooling for the cylinder of a reciprocating engine is provided, in which the internal cooling by oil predominates and only the upper part of the cylinder, which is not reached by the internal cooling, is cooled from outside, to be precise likewise by oil. The specific measures are a special piston design, a special, very athermanous combustion behaviour and a special guidance of the cooling oil jet in the working cylinder.
