PURPOSE:To obtain 3-methylbutanal easily in high yield, by isomerizing 3-methyl- 3-buten-1-ol, etc. in the liquid phase in the presence of an oxide catalyst containing at least two or more metals selected from copper, Cr and Zn. CONSTITUTION:3-Methyl-3-buten-1-ol or 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol or both are isomerized to give 3-methylbutanal. In he process, an oxide catalyst consisting of a combination of at least two metals selected from copper, chromium or zinc such as copper zinc oxide, copper chromium oxide, zinc chromium oxide or copper chromium zinc oxide is used as a catalyst, and the isomerization is carried out in the liquid phase.
