In a method for the operation of an aspirated internal combustion engine with a gas engine driven by the combustion air, the efficiency of the gas engine, particularly in the lower load ranges of the internal combustion engine, is improved in that the combustion air is increasingly heated upstream of the gas engine as the load demand on the internal combustion engine decreases. A gas engine driven by the combustion air drawn in by the internal combustion engine has a control element, operated together with a charging governor of the internal combustion engine, for mixing combustion air drawn directly from the atmosphere with warmed combustion air drawn through a heat exchanger heated by the exhaust gas of the internal combustion engine.
