A pulverised coal burner of small to medium output is proposed, having a fuel nozzle which opens into a combustion chamber and is fed with pulverised coal pneumatically with a carrier gas, and having a pilot burner which can be switched on and off, permitting a complete combustion of the pulverised coal place the burner nozzle concentrically surrounds the pilot burner or the pilot flame, and is constructed as an annular gap nozzle, which has injector openings within the combustion space on the peripheral side for sucking in hot combustion gases. The mixture of pulverised coal and carrier gas is preferably preheated to about 600 DEG C by heat exchange at the outer casing of the burner pipe, and is then given a preheating temperature of 800-1000 DEG C, at which it flows into the combustion chamber, in the injector-like annular nozzle due to the recirculation of combustion gases through the injector openings in the annular gap nozzle.
