A fuel feed method and a mode of operation of the Otto cycle process in which the compression ratio and the volumetric efficiency are not adjusted at all loads, the charge of fuel vapour and air being so prepared and fed prior to entry into the cylinder that the charge in the cylinder is formed by a working part having an air-to-fuel ratio, which takes part in the combustion, and a non-working part composed of pure air. To this end the fuel is heated in a heat exchanger by the exhaust gases, vaporised at constant pressure and mixed with the air by a metering device upstream of the inlet valves. In the event of an increase of the load, the working part increases and the non-working part decreases to the extent that at maximum load the entire charge consists solely of the working part.
