The heat exchanger for transfer of heat between two flowing media (in 2 and 3) comprises a partition between these media consisting of a double-walled (4, 5) metal, e.g. copper tube leaving at least one passage (7) between inner (4) and outer (5) tube for leak detection. The two tubes are in intimate metallic contact over most of their respective surface areas to optimise heat transfer. The inner perimeter of the outer tube is greater than the outer perimeter of the inner tube and the composite tube (4, 5) has an oval or laterally flattened cross-section. This partitioning tube may be contained within an outer third tube (1) its largest width being equal to the inner diameter of that tube (1).
