Capsules for accommodating measured quantities of insecticidal concentrates, insecticides, fungicides, antiseptics or powders, are made of gelatine tanned by external application of a tanning medium comprising benzoquinone. The tanning is effected by pre-treatment of the capsule before the introduction of its contents, by immersion in a methyl alcohol solution of benzoquinone. The portion of the capsule that is to form the seal may be left untanned until after sealing, and the sealed end may be made relatively thin so that it can be easily snipped off or pierced. The flexibility of the capsule may be increased by incorporating a hygroscopic agent such as glycerine up to 20 per cent, in the gelatine of the capsule before tanning. The Provisional Specification refers to the use of other tanning agents, such as formaldehyde, resorcinol, pyrocatechol, tannic acid and polymerised products of quinones, e.g. hydroquinone, and states that other protein capsules, e.g. capsules of casein, may be artificially hardened. Also alternative methods of hardening consist in incorporating a tanning agent either in the concentrate, or in the gel material from which the capsule is made.ALSO:Capsules for accommodating measured quantities of insecticidal concentrates, insecticides, fungicides, antiseptics or powders, are made of gelatine tanned by external application of a tanning medium comprising benzoquinone.
