A synthetic resin compsn. for anionic electrodeposition is prepd. by adding ethylenical α-β-unsatd. dicarboxylic acid to a mixt. of 1, 2-, 1,4-polybutadiene, and liq. petroleum resin; esterifying the half amt. of dicarboxylic acid; reacting the product with resol-type carboxylic acid resin. The improvement shows that solid resin and novolac-type carboxylic acid resin are used for liq. petroleum resin and resoltype carboxylic acid resin, respectively. Novolac-type resin is prepd. ny reacting 1 mole of phenol with 1 mole or less of formaldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst. Solid petroleum resin has 500-2000m.W., 100or greater Iodine value, and a softening point of 80oC or higher.
