PURPOSE:To provide a sequestering agent capable of substituting for phosphate builders, or of reducing the usage of said builders, having at least an equivalent effect with that of phosphate builders, by incorporating an alkali metal or amine salt of particular (meth)acrylic acid telomers as an active ingredient. CONSTITUTION:A sequestering agent having as an active ingredient one or more of alkali metals or amine salts of (meth)acrylic acid telomers which have an average MW of 500-50,000, prepared by using alcohol as a telogen. Said sequestering agent, having as a builder for detergents at least an equivalent effect with that of phosphate builders such as sodium tripolyphosphate, can be used solely as well as in combination with phosphate builders, thus reducing the usage of the latter and the amt. of active agents incorporated. Said sequestering agent is effective in preventing the formation of scale of boilers, etc. and removing it, if formed, and it is also useful in decontamination of soils containing harmful metals.
