PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polymer having high qualities with suppressing formation of low-molecular-weight substances, by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a Ziegler catalyst under specific conditions, adding a condensate of epichlorohydrin and a phenol compound as a catalytic deactivator, eliminating volatile matters. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene or a mixture of it and 3-18C alpha-olefin is polymerized in the presence (or absence) of an inert hydrocarbon solvent using a Ziegler catalyst at >=130 deg.C average polymerization temperature, a condensate of epichlorohydrin and a phenol compound or alcohol compound as a deactivator in an amount to deactivate the catalyst in a solution or suspension state, or in a pure solid or molten state is added and blended with the polymerization product, the catalyst is deactivated, reacted monomers and the solvent are separated from the polymer mixture, to give the desired polymer containing the deactivator and the reaction product of the deactivator and the catalyst.
