The invention relates to the field of the oil industry. It relates to a process for the treatment of petroleum residues with a relative density lower than 0.9218, containing a high percentage of asphaltic matter, characterised in that it consists in subjecting, under well-determined conditions, the petroleum residues to a viscosity reduction operation, in then subjecting the residue with a reduced viscosity to a deasphalting operation with saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, and in then subjecting the deasphalted oil to a hydrotreatment with particular catalysts. Application to the treatment of petroleum residues originating especially from atmospheric-pressure or vacuum distillation operations.
