PURPOSE:To obtain the titled friction material of excellent bonding strength, by feeding a lowly heat-conductive friction material to a mold, preforming irregularities on the surface and at the same time preheating the mold to effect partial curing of the material, laminating the material with a highly heat-conductive friction material and heat-forming the laminate. CONSTITUTION:A lowly heat-conductive friction material such as asbestos is fed to a mold of a predetermined shape, and irregularities are preformed by a press on the surface which is laminated with a highly heat-conductive friction material. During this preforming, the mold and the lowly heat-conductive friction material fed are preheated to about 80-120 deg.C to effect partial curing of the material. The material is then laminated with a highly heat-conductive friction material such as a metallic friction material, then pressed to a predetermined external shape, and heat-formed at a temperature of about 150-160 deg.C to obtain the purpose friction material for disc brakes. In this way, the bonding strength between the laminate surfaces can be improved because the irregularities are not damaged during the heat forming.
