A machine for automatic gripping and palletting of containers, especially bottles, glasses, or tubs, which are made especially of plastic, is described. The machine automatically grasps layers of containers and places them on trays in the form of open cartons (37) or dishes or plates and stacks the filled trays by respectively placing a further tray under a tray lifted by a lift frame (17), onto which further tray the lift frame (17) then places the lifted tray or trays. Finally the completed stack is placed on a pallet. The lift frame has cheeks (33) which can open and close and engage with angled pieces (38) under the edges of the tray.
