In a process for durably applying metallic layers to a polymer film, in particular to produce autoregenerative capacitors, to suppress the corrosion which occurs in the layer applied in the course of time in the case of such films, for example, of polypropylene, the layer or the layers, preferably applied by vapour deposition, are provided during the application and/or immediately thereafter, with a catalytic poison and/or exposed to a treatment which prevents a catalysis of the layer, for example in the form of an irradiation with high-energy particles. This makes it possible to construct self-regenerating capacitors using as dielectric a polymer film which is protected against loss of capacitance due to corrosion of the layer.
