PURPOSE:To produce the titled polymer having excellent heat-stability of color, without producing low-molecular weight compound, by polymerizing ethylene, etc. with a Ziegler catalyst, adding a mixture of a phenolic compound and a fatty acid metal salt as a deactivation agent for the catalyst, and separating the unreacted monomer, etc. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene or a mixture of ethylene and a 3-18C alpha-olefin is polymerized at an average polymerization temperature of >=130 deg.C in the presence or absence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent using a Ziegler catalyst. After the polymerization, the catalyst is inactivated by adding a mixture of a phenolic compound and a compound such as a fatty acid metal salt, a basic metal (hydr) oxide, a metal phosphite, a metal silicate, a metal aluminate, etc. in the form of a solution or suspension or as a pure solid or in molten state. Thereafter, the unreacted monomers and if necessary the solvent are separated from the polymer mixture to obtain the objective polymer containing the deactivation agent and the reaction product of the deactivation agent and the catalyst.
