PURPOSE:To perform a sufficient presetting operation by a simple device wherein a display section of a digital display measuring device is provided with a unit displaying a preset value of an upper-rank figure than that displayed by a measured value display unit, and a means to preset a measurement reference value to this unit. CONSTITUTION:A block gage 32 having a length virtually equal to the measured length of a substance 10 to be measured is set opposite to a contactor 12, and a digital display measuring device is moved vertically in the axial direction so as to be fixed at a contact position. At this time, a measurement reference value equivalent to the length of the block gage 32 is stored in a preset device 30. Then, it is inputted for presetting to a preset display unit 28 by a preset button, and figures of 01 are displayed therein. Next, the contactor 12 is lifted to remove the gage 32 so that the substance 10 to be measured be opposite to the contactor 12. Then, the contactor 12 is moved to the substance 10 and stopped when the fore end thereof contacts with the substance 10, and then read the display on a display unit 24.
