The reactor chamber is enclosed in the basin space which is filled and pressurised with a neutron absorbing soln. The reactor chamber contains the reactor hearth and is cooled with relatively clean water. This is supplied by a pump from the heat exchanger via the inlet pipe and returned to the heat exchanger via the return pipe. The heat exchanger is pressure-sealed in a space (4) so that both the exchanger space and the basin space are side by side, separated by a chosen distance in a prestressed concrete monolithic body.
