PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a raw material of dye intermediate, synthetic resin, etc., easily, in high efficiency, by reacting bis(trichloromethylphenyl) carbonate with a benzene compound in an organic solvent, and hydrolyzing with an alkali. CONSTITUTION:Bis(trichloromethylphenyl) carbonate is made to react with a benzene compound of formula I (X is H, halogen, OH, NO2, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, or lower alkoxycarbonyl; n is 1-3) in an organic solvent such as carbon disulfide, chloroform, etc. in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst at <=50 deg.C, preferably at -5-+15 deg.C. The obtained bis[(benzoyl)phenyl] carbonate of formula II is hydrolyzed at <=50 deg.C, preferably at 10-30 deg.C in the presence of 2-8 times mole, preferably 3-5.5 times mole of an alkali to obtain the objective compound of formula III.
