PURPOSE:To easily prepare a diazo compound at low cost in high yield useful as masking reagent for the COOH group in organic compounds and as detective reagent for said group, by the reaction of a (polycyclic) aromatic hydrazone as the oxidizing agent using an N-substituted amine halide. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be prepared by carrying out a reaction, in the presence of an inert solvent, between (A) an aromatic hydrazone {e.g., a compound of formula I [R1 and R2 are each (halogen-, alkyl-, alkoxy-, or NO2- substituted) aromatic substituent]}or polycyclic aromatic hydrazone [e.g., a compound of formula R3=N-NH2CR3 is polycyclic aromatic group which may have substituents similar to those in R1 and (or R2)] and (B) an N-substituted amine halide [e.g., a compound of formula II (R4 and R5 are each H, 1-8C alkyl, or alicyclic group directly or indirectly (through oxygen) bonded to the other; X is I, Br, or Cl)]. EFFECT:An N-substituted amine hydrohalogenate as a by-product can be reused as an N-substituted amine halide by the reaction with a hypohalogenous acid salt.
