PURPOSE:To obtain an isopropenyltoluene copolymer capable of providing adhesives excellent in adhesion, etc., by copolymerizing a component comprising (alpha- methyl)styrene and vinyltoluene with an isopropenyltoluene component. CONSTITUTION:10-80mol% component comprising (alpha-methyl)-styrene and vinyltoluene in any desired proportion is mixed with 90-20mol% isopropenyltoluene so that the total may be 100mol%. This monomer mixture is polymerized in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst (e.g., boron trifluoride/phenol complex) to obtain the purpose isopropenyl-toluene copolymer having a number-average MW of 400-2,000, an MW distribution (weight-average MW/number-average MW) of 1.1-2.5, a softening point of 60-140 deg.C, and a melt viscosity at 200 deg.C of 20- 1,300cP.
