The gas filter (1) is designed as a chamber filter. At least one parallelepipedal filter chamber (21...24) is accommodated in a housing (2) as the filter insert (3), in which chamber the gas stream to be filtered flows in through one of the large surface area ends and flows out again through the large surface area end opposite. The clear distance between the two gas-permeable ends is relatively large and is at least 50 mm. The filter composition is composed of an unbound packing of granulated coal. The filter inserts (21...24) are preferably arranged in pairs. <IMAGE>
