The device comprises an evacuatable recipient (1), which can be sealed in a gas-tight fashion, can be provided with an atmosphere of inert gas, and in which above a carrier (2) for the optical substrates (3) to be coated and distanced therefrom two sputter sources (30 and 40) or one sputter source and one electron beam gun are arranged, preferably with an adjustable inclination with respect to one another, in such a way that the paths of the atoms knocked off the cathode material plates (33 and 43) cross with respect to the substrate to be coated before they are deposited. It is now possible by means of these measures subsequently to apply an aluminium oxide/silicon dioxide compound together with a substance having reversible photochromic properties to an optical substrate and thus subsequently to provide the latter with the reversible photochromic properties. <IMAGE>
