A device for controlling the compression ratio of a multi-cylinder reciprocating piston internal combustion engine as a function of the load has a main piston (2) assigned to each cylinder (1), which slides in the cylinder and at its top dead centre encloses a combustion space (4) opposite the cylinder head (3), and a secondary piston (7), which slides in a secondary cylinder (8) arranged in the cylinder head and connected to the combustion space. This secondary piston can be adjusted in order to vary the volume of the combustion space as a function of the load of the internal combustion engine. In order to achieve a further improvement in the combustion conditions in the combustion space with a device of this type, especially during partial load states, it is proposed that the secondary cylinder (8) be arranged in the cylinder head (3) in such a way that in its position producing the smallest combustion space volume, the secondary piston (7) forms a squish gap (9) in relation to the main piston (2) standing at top dead centre, which gap produces a squish flow directed into the other combustion space (4).
