A process for the synthesis of ammonia involves reacting hydrogen and nitrogen at a synthesis pressure of 120 kg/cm<2>G or lower in the presence of a catalyst in a reactor (2) to form a product gas containing hydrogen, nitrogen and ammonia. The product gas from the reactor (2) is fed through an adsorbent bed (4A) in order to adsorb ammonia onto the bed. Concentrated gaseous ammonia is then subsequently desorbed from the adsorbent bed (4A) separately from the nonadsorbed components of the product gas, and the desorbed gaseous ammonia is cooled in a liquefier unit (6) to obtain liquid ammonia by condensation. The residual product gas remaining after ammonia separation is recirculated to the synthesis reactor (2). In the bed (4A), ammonia is collected and recovered by thermal swing adsorption-desorption, but in other embodiments of the invention pressure swing adsorption-desorption is employed. <IMAGE> |
