PURPOSE:To prepare the titled polymer having excellent heat resistance, easily, without causing hydrolysis, by reacting a diamine with an epoxy compound in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid, and subjecting the product to dehydrohalogenation reaction with a base. CONSTITUTION:The polymer of formula III (one or more Y<1>-Y<4> are group of formula IV and the others are H or group of formula V) is prepared by reacting the diamine of formula I (Ar is bivalent aromatic organic group; Ar' is tetravalent aromatic organic group wherein 4 C=O groups are bonded directly to different C atoms and each pair of C=O groups are bonded to the adjacent C atoms in the Ar' group; Ar'' is trivalent aromatic organic group wherein three C=O groups are bonded directly to different C atoms and the pair of C=O groups are bonded to the adjacent C atoms in the Ar'' group; n and m are 0 or positive integer and n+m>0) with the epoxy compound of formula II (X is halogen; R is H or organic group) in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid, and subjecting the reaction product to dehydrohalogenation reaction with a base.
