PURPOSE:To prepare the titled compound useful as a humectant, etc., economically in an industrial scale, by extracting the umbilical cord, etc. with an alkali, removing proteins from the extract, precipitating with cetyl pyridinium chloride, dissolving the precipitate, treating the solution with an anion exchange resin, adding ethanol thereto, and collecting the produced precipitate. CONSTITUTION:The umbilical cord or cockscomb of fowls is cut to small pieces and extracted with two times volume of a 0.03-0.05N NaOH solution at 60- 65 deg.C for 30min under stirring. The extract is neutralized with 30W/W% trichloroacetic acid, and then the trichloroacetic acid is added in an amount of 3- 5W/W% to effect the removal of proteins. The obtained liquid is filtered, and the filtrate is neutralized, dialyzed, and filtered again. 1pt. of the filtrate is mixed with 12-15pts. of 4V/V% cetyl pyridinium chloride solution at a ratio of 1.5-2. The produced precipitate is filtered, dissolved in a 0.2-0.4M NaCl solution, added with about 5-10% of an anion exchange resin and stirred gently for 30min. The product is filtered, and the filtrate is added with two times volume of ethanol. The obtained precipitate is collected and dried to obtain the objective compound.
