PURPOSE:To read a signal when a switch is turned on and write as specification setting data, and to facilitate the setting and modification of a specification by providing the switch and a nonvolatile semiconductor memory in a character recognizing device. CONSTITUTION:An optical character reader 1 is constituted as a handy type, and a signal read by the device 1 is quantized by a quantizing circuit 5 into a binary signal, which is inputted to the list processing and editing circuit 9 after being processed by a detecting and segmenting circuit 6, sampling circuit 7, and similarity calculating circuit 8. This circuit 9 checks whether the input data matches with the specification or not. The nonvolatile semiconductor memory 11 is provided in this character recognizing device 12 with this circuit 9, and the switch 14 is connected to an I/O port 13 connected to the memory 11. Then, the signal when the switch 14 is turned on is read by a CPU10 and written in the memory 11 as the specification modification data to facilitate the setting and modification of the specification.
