Precipitation-draining barrier cover for landfill sites

In order to ensure that toxic and polluting substances deposited in a landfill site remain at the point of their original deposition, the medium which dissolves them and transports them away must be kept away from the landfill site. This medium is generally drainage water resulting from precipitation. The application of a water-draining barrier cover on the landfill surface prevents the occurrence of the aforementioned problem. For protection of the barrier cover it should be designed to be resistant to roots and rodents and be capable of being covered with an erosion-resistant, that is to say vegetation-bearing, earth layer. The effects of the landfill gases from inside are to be prevented by the arrangement of a cavity-containing layer below the barrier cover, which diverts the gas to the exterior via openings, is segmented to restrict possible smouldering fires and is screened with respect to the barrier cover by a heat-shielding intermediate layer. Overstretching of the barrier cover caused by settlement is avoided by subdivision and displaceable, mutually overlapping arrangement. Settlement basins devoid of drainage are to be prevented by preventative, adequately inclined profiling of the landfill site surface. The degassing system can be developed for industrial reclamation of landfill gas.
