A method and a device for flooding a space surrounded by a wall with a gas, which space is connected to at least one gas delivery member and has at least one closeable service hole, are to prevent the formation of temporally constant dead zones, the gas present in the space being reliably removed after a certain time from the useful volume and being restored to the desired specification. To this end, the gas stream or part streams of the gas, which is to flood the space, are fed into the space in time intervals in at least one flow direction per interval, preferably with an area load which is based on the area of the gas injection member in question and which is essentially uniform.
