The image processing system according to the invention has a first input unit for inputting an image signal, a second input unit for inputting a character or number signal or code signal, a binary conversion unit to bring the image signal into binary form and furthermore a unit for grey-scale-processing of the image signal, a discriminator unit for determining the presence or absence of a grey-scale value in the image signal, and an output unit for outputting the image signal, when the discriminator unit detects the absence of the grey-scale value, or the character or number signal or code signal as a digital image signal without the signal being processed by the grey-scale-processing unit.
