NEW MATERIAL:The 3-substituted tetrafluoroindole derivative of formula I (R is alkyl, aryl, acyl, ester, sulfonyl or H; X is methyl, formyl, oxazolonylidenemethyl or dehydroalanyl, provided that when R is H, X is oxazolonylidenemethyl or dehydroalanyl). EXAMPLE:1-Benzyl-3-methyl-4,5,6,7-tetrafluoroindole. USE:Useful as a synthetic intermediate of fluorine-containing tryptophan, fluorine- containing tryptamine, fluorine-containing alkaloid, etc. For example, tetrafluorotryptophan active to inhibit the formation of tryptophanyl hydroxamate and tryptophanyl-t-RNA can be prepared from 3-formyl-4,5,6,7-tetrafluoroindole via the above intermediate.
