NEW MATERIAL:3,11-Disubstituted-dispiro[5.1.5.1]tetradecane-7,14-dione of formula I (R, R' are alkyl, alkoxy or 1-10 carbon atoms). EXAMPLE:3,11-Dipropyl-dispiro[5.1.5.1]tetradecane-7,14-dione. USE:It is used as a component of liquid crystal compositions, having an action of lowering the driving voltage of the liquid crystal display that is made by using a liquid crystal composition containing the same. PREPARATION:As shown in the reaction equation, trans-4-substituted-cyclohexylcarbonyl chloride is allowed to react with triethylamine in a benzene solvent in a nitrogen atmosphere to give the compound of the formula.
