The four-colour halftone printing method sets out from four partial images, each of which is applied to an impression cylinder (2a, 2b, 2c, 2d) and is formed by a different colour. The colours used are yellow, magenta, cyan and black and have different values of adhesion. The colours are applied in pairs to an impression cylinder blanket (3) and there form transfer surfaces which are offset relative to one another. In this case, partial images whose colours (4, 5) have the greatest and the second greatest adhesion are applied to the one transfer surface and the partial images whose colours (6, 7) have the second least and the least adhesion are applied to the other transfer surface. Colours from the first transfer surface are then applied to the printing carrier (13) and to these colours are applied the colours from the second transfer surface. Due to the graded adhesion of the layers of colour applied to the printing carrier, said layers are not mixed, which results in a soft, satisfactory colour transfer and an excellent colour reproduction true to the original. <IMAGE>
